Implementation of Ultrasound Onboard Cruise Ships

Ruben Parejo, MD

A Major Advancement in Cruise Ship Medicine

During the year 2024, we embarked on an important project to draft guidelines for the implementation of ultrasound devices onboard cruise ships. This vital initiative was sparked by Dr. Benjamin Shore, who recognized the potential life-saving benefits that the implementation of ultrasound onboard cruise ships brings.

Recognizing the unique challenges healthcare professionals face at sea, Dr. Shore's vision was to enhance the diagnostic capabilities onboard cruise ships, ultimately improving patient outcomes. With this goal in mind, the work involved updating the cruise ship medicine guidelines to ensure that each vessel is equipped with at least one ultrasound device and has at least one onboard physician trained in ultrasound physics, knowledge, and various emergency medicine applications.

The drafting process was collaborative and inclusive. Different cruise lines had the opportunity to review and provide feedback on the proposed language and implementation timeline for these new guidelines. This collective effort ensured that the guidelines were both practical and beneficial to all stakeholders within the maritime industry.

As a result of this comprehensive process, effective January 1, 2026, cruise ships adhering to the guidelines should have at least one ultrasound device onboard and a qualified physician to operate it. This marks a significant step forward in our mission to advance healthcare standards at sea.

The introduction of ultrasound devices onboard cruise ships represents a major milestone in maritime medicine. It allows for the early detection and treatment of various medical conditions, thereby reducing the need for emergency evacuations and enhancing the overall health and safety of passengers and crew members.

We are grateful for the support and collaboration of the cruise industry in making this initiative a reality. Together, we are driving positive change and setting new standards for healthcare at sea. We look forward to continued cooperation and innovation as we strive to improve the well-being of all who sail on cruise ships.

Stay tuned for more updates and insightful articles in our future newsletters, as we continue to advance cruise ship medicine and foster a culture of excellence within the industry.
