Emergency Medicine Informatics Section Welcomes New Leadership

The ACEP Emergency Medicine Informatics Section is excited to announce its new leadership team for the upcoming term. Together, this group brings diverse expertise across emergency medicine, clinical informatics, education, and cybersecurity, and is committed to advancing the role of informatics in improving patient care, operations, and research in emergency medicine.

Section Chair: Shuhan He, MD

Dr. Shuhan He is an emergency physician and clinical informaticist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He serves on the faculty of the Laboratory of Computer Science and is Program Director of the Master of Science in Healthcare Data Analytics at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. His work focuses on the intersection of emergency medicine and computer science, with emphasis on algorithmic approaches, large-scale actionable data, and AI-driven decision support systems.

Section Secretary: Nico Kahl, MD

Dr. Nico Kahl is a Clinical Informaticist and Attending Emergency Physician at UC San Diego Health. He provides direct patient care across all three UC San Diego emergency departments while supervising residents and medical students. His informatics work emphasizes implementing projects into clinical practice with a hybrid operational and research focus. His expertise includes artificial intelligence implementation (prompt engineering, note summarization, ambient scribing), cybersecurity disaster preparedness, telehealth and virtual care innovation, and Epic electronic health record build and customization. He is passionate about leveraging informatics to enhance real-time quality improvement and clinical care delivery.

Immediate Past Chair: Christian Dameff, MD, MS

Dr. Christian Dameff is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Biomedical Informatics, and Computer Science at UC San Diego Health, where he also serves as Medical Director of Cybersecurity. He is a nationally recognized leader in cybersecurity and informatics, bridging technical expertise with clinical practice to ensure the safety, resilience, and effectiveness of health systems. His work includes pioneering efforts in cybersecurity preparedness for healthcare as well as advancing academic emergency medicine and informatics training.

Looking Ahead

The new EMI leadership team is eager to build on the section’s strong foundation. Over the coming year, they aim to foster greater collaboration among members, explore cutting-edge applications of AI and informatics in emergency medicine, and create opportunities for members to share ideas, challenges, and innovations.
