Highlights from the Annual Convention of the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine, Inc. April 26-29, 2025.
This four-day emergency medicine convention featured an inspiring opening ceremony led by hosts Dr. Bryan Francis Rodriguez and Dr. Czarina Cristina Reyes. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Philippine College of Emergency Medicine President, Dr. Jeremy Cordero, emphasizing the College’s commitment to global leadership and innovation. The College’s Past President, Dr. Eligo Maghirang, addressed the growth of the specialty of emergency medicine in the Philippines.
A captivating educational program followed, addressing patient care needs, artificial intelligence (AI), core EM updates/best practices, process improvement and secure data health systems management, and EM physician wellness needs. Day two focused on multiple opportunities to utilize AI in the ED, including triage applications, patient engagement, and airway management. Ethical and regulatory responsibilities for incorporating AI into our ED practice include AI literacy, patient safety, legal liability, data privacy and adapting AI to existing workflow patterns. A day-three panel discussion addressed health economics issues specific to the Philippines at the system level, including inequity, reimbursement timelines, accreditation complexities, and risks associated with upcoding. The remaining scientific didactic sessions addressed topics including emergency pediatric care, advanced simulation in EM education, emergency nursing development, trauma, toxicology, and innovations in prehospital care.
In conclusion, this conference provided attendees with a robust academic experience in broad areas of critical EM content and laid groundwork for Philippine national and international collaborative work, particularly in digital transformation, clinical governance and global emergency preparedness.
