Stephen Hendriksen

Stephen Masao Hendriksen, MD, FACEP, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician with advanced fellowship training in undersea and hyperbaric medicine. He currently serves as the medical director of the Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic and practices clinically in both emergency medicine and hyperbaric medicine at Kent Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island. Dr. Hendriksen earned his doctor of medicine degree from UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and completed his emergency medicine residency at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed a fellowship in undersea and hyperbaric medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Hendriksen was an attending physician and faculty member at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he was the fellowship director of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship from 2016 to 2022. He cofounded the Council of Fellowship Directors for Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and has led or contributed to multiple national educational committees, including the ACGME Milestones Committee and the ABPM Longitudinal Assessment Program. He is also Editor-in-Chief for Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine content at StatPearls.
Dr. Hendriksen has a special clinical interest in hyperbaric treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning, central retinal artery occlusion, and radiation injuries. He has authored or coauthored over 25 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters in hyperbaric medicine and has presented original research and lectured at numerous national and international conferences, including the ACEP Scientific Assembly, UHMS Annual Scientific Meeting, and Pacific Chapter UHMS Symposium.
Dr. Hendriksen currently serves as chair of the ACEP Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Section. He previously served as councilor, newsletter editor, and chair-elect. His leadership and dedication have been recognized with the Outstanding Program Leadership Award from Hennepin County Medical Center and the President’s Award for Best Oral Presentation at UHMS.
