ACEP Recognizes National Physician Suicide Awareness Day

On National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, ACEP acknowledges the incredible pressure on emergency physicians and the vital importance of protecting the mental health of those on the frontlines.

At a time when 63% of physicians report feeling burned out it is more important than ever to empower emergency physicians on the job and eliminate the stigma and systemic barriers that prevent emergency physicians from seeking the care they need.

Today, we raise awareness of the tragic loss of physician lives to suicide. More important than just awareness, today should be a day of support for every physician who struggles with mental illness.

Reach out to a physician you know and thank them for the work they do to heal others. Let them know that you support them and appreciate how challenging our work can be.

Lastly, be mindful that the words you say, and the actions you take, can change the culture of how we care for people with mental illness. The stigma of mental illness, especially for physicians, often prevents them from seeking care.

Together, we can continue to support changes necessary to empower every emergency physician to prioritize their health and well-being. A healthy physician workforce is vital to ensuring that every patient receives the quality care they deserve.

ACEP President L. Anthony Cirillo, MD, FACEP

ACEP is leading efforts to prioritize physician health and well-being, including a continued commitment to reauthorize the law named in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Lorna Breen, an ACEP member who died by suicide during the pandemic. Under this law, more than $100 million has been distributed for programs to improve access to mental health resources and your support made it possible. Now, legislation is needed to secure its funding going forward.

Tell Congress to Reauthorize the Dr. Lorna Breen Law

Congress needs to hear directly from emergency physicians to emphasize the importance of safeguarding the health and well-being of those on the front lines.

You are not alone

Every emergency physician should be able to get the mental health care they need. We are making important progress but there’s much more work to be done. We see your tireless dedication and we know better days are ahead – we will not stop fighting for you.
