L. Anthony Cirillo, MD, FACEP
Sep 6, 2025 4:00 pm – Dr. L. Anthony Cirillo Addresses Council

Dr. Haddock Passes the Gavel to Dr. Cirillo

After accepting the Presidential gavel from Immediate Past President Alison J. Haddock, MD, FACEP, new ACEP President L. Anthony Cirillo, delivered his first address to ACEP members and Councillors at the 2025 Council Meeting in Salt Lake City. He offered a plea to his fellow emergency physicians, asking them to use 2025-26 to understand things aren’t perfect. But the empathy, compassion, and determination of emergency physicians is exactly why there’s hope.

Dr. Cirillo encouraged cooperation, particularly with EMRA. He asked his fellow emergency physicians to explore better ways support and care for patients with mental illness, particularly children. He told the audience that emergency physicians are special because they routinely – and must continue to - treat patients as if they were a loved one. Dr. Cirillo used home improvement as an analogy, saying that there might be things wrong with the house. It needs some work. That’s why it takes everybody.

“If you think our house isn’t perfect, I agree with you,” Dr. Cirillo said. “If you have thoughts on how to make it better, you’re welcome to come. But you can’t just come for demo day. If you come for demo day, you have to stick around for the rebuild.”

Near the end of his address, Dr. Cirillo showed a picture of the two pins that have guided him and still guide him as an emergency physician. It was a FACEP pin to show a commitment he made years ago and continued that dedication as a Fellow of the College. The other was a pin he acquired during his time with EMRA.

He also showed a picture of Ted Lasso, a television soccer coach who famously hung a sign in the locker room that said, “Believe.”

“I believe in this College,” he said. “And mostly, I believe in all of you.”
