Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Domeier attended the University of Michigan for undergraduate training. Afterward, he graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and did his Emergency Medicine Residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Dr. Domeier served as a flight physician with DMC Skyteam during residency, which introduced him to service as an EMS provider. He started his Emergency Medicine career at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital – Ann Arbor (SJMH-AA) and continued to work as a flight physician with Midwest Medflight, becoming the Medical Director for the service. Dr. Domeier served as EMS Medical Director for a two-county EMS system, the Washtenaw/Livingston Medical Control Authority, for over 30 years. He continued to actively practice Emergency Medicine until, after 38 years at SJMH, he became semi-retired but continues to perform EMS and research activities for his group and hospital.
During his career, Dr. Domeier has served on the board of directors for the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians (MCEP), also as chair of the MCEP EMS Committee. He also served as an ACEP Councilor representing MCEP, served on the SAEM and ACEP EMS committees, and on the editorial board for the ACEP publication Foresight. Dr. Domeier also served on the ACEP Tellers and Credentials Committee, the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services Panel of Commissioners and as a reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Domeier was introduced to national EMS activities through the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). He served as the program chair for an NAEMSP summer meeting, chair for the NAEMSP standards and clinical practice committee, and on the NAEMSP board of directors.
Dr. Domeier’s EMS research activities included development of Michigan statewide protocols, which helped to eliminate the routine use of the rigid backboard for spinal stabilization from EMS practice, and the development of EMS assessment of cardiac arrest management.
