Dr Amanda Irish is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She earned her MD from Oregon Health & Science University and completed residency at the University of Connecticut, followed by an International Emergency Medicine/Global Health Fellowship at Prisma Health-Midlands. Her academic credentials include an MPH in Epidemiology with Certificate in Emerging Infectious Disease Epidemiology, MS in Human Physiology, and Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Dr Irish has demonstrated exceptional leadership in organized emergency medicine at both national and state levels. She served on the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA) Board of Directors as Vice Speaker (2021-2022) and Speaker (2022-2023), where she led policy development and strategic planning while organizing biannual council meetings and committees. Her transition to ACEP leadership has been equally impressive, currently serving on multiple committees including the Steering, Membership, Emergency Medicine Practice, and Reference Committees. She serves on the executive committee and as Councilor for the ACEP Young Physicians Section. She also holds the position of Director-at-Large on the Iowa ACEP Board of Directors.

Dr Irish's clinical expertise focuses on emerging infectious diseases and public health emergency preparedness. She serves on the University of Iowa's Emergency Management Committee and Special Pathogens Unit, and was recently awarded a K12 for her research on “Pathogenic Zoonotic Influenza Mitigation to Protect Food Security and Public Health.” Her work has been presented at national meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Irish exemplifies the ACEP Horizon Award's recognition of emerging leaders who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the College and specialty through dedicated service, innovative thinking, and commitment to advancing emergency medicine.

About This Award

The Council Horizon Award is presented to an individual within the first five years of council service who demonstrates outstanding contributions and participation in Council activities. The award is given as needed, not necessarily annually.
