From Uncertainty to Clarity: Transforming Emergency Department Infection Diagnosis with Host Response Technology

Sunday, September 7
Presented by: Diasorin, Inc.

  • Speakers: David M. Engman, MD, PhD, Chairman of Pathology Emeritus - Cedars Sinai Medical Center; David B. Hale, MD, PhD, Director of Emergency Medicine/Associate Chief Medical Officer - ThedaCare New London Hospital
  • Time: 11:30am – 12:15pm
  • Location: Exhibit Hall, Expert Theater 2

Acute infections remain one of the most challenging presentations in the Emergency Department (ED), where time-sensitive decisions must be made with limited diagnostic clarity. In this Expert Theater, Dr. David Engman, Chairman of Pathology Emeritus - Cedars Sinai Medical Center, will introduce the clinical complexity of infectious disease presentations and the limitations of traditional diagnostic approaches. He will highlight the promise of host response technologies, focusing on MeMed BV—a novel assay that distinguishes bacterial from viral infections using the patient’s immune response.

Dr. Engman will then host a discussion with Dr. David Hale, Director of Emergency Medicine and Associate Chief Medical Officer of ThedaCare New London Hospital, exploring the real-world journey of adopting MeMed BV across a multi-hospital system. Together, they will review the clinical, operational, and financial drivers behind the decision to implement this technology, including the challenges of novel test adoption, integration into sepsis protocols, and its role in antimicrobial stewardship. The conversation will be grounded in data from ThedaCare and other institutions and framed by case studies that illustrate the impact of MeMed BV on patient care and decision-making.
